Sometimes, the biggest shifts begin with the smallest steps.

We often think that defining moments in university come from big events…like declaring a major, getting an internship, or leading a research project. But more often than not, it’s the quiet, simple decisions that change everything.
Like choosing to sit in the front row of class.
Or introducing yourself to the person sitting beside you.
Or deciding on a whim to check out a SUO event between classes.
It doesn’t always feel big in the moment. But over time, these small steps become turning points. They’re the choices that build friendships, open doors, and slowly shape who you become during your time here.

- Where you choose to sit in class
That moment when you walk into class and scan for a seat…it might not feel like much, but it’s often the first choice that sets the tone. Sitting near the front might help you stay more engaged. Sitting beside someone new might lead to a friendship or a potential group project partner.

- Saying Yes to an Event (even if you almost didn’t go)
Maybe you were going to skip it. Maybe you were too anxious to go. Maybe it wasn’t your thing. But then you showed up. You went to that trivia night. Or that club meeting. Or that film analysis discussion. Or the tote-bag painting night. You went. And everything shifted.
Attending a single event might introduce you to a club that becomes your safe space, a person who has the same interests as you, or an opportunity you wouldn’t have heard about otherwise.
The small decision of walking into an event alone can lead to a big outcome of walking out with new friends, new ideas, or a sense of belonging.

- Introducing yourself to someone
It’s awkward, sure. But introducing yourself to a classmate, a club executive, or a stranger at an SUO event can open the door to connection. That “Hey, I’m new here too” moment can lead to shared lunches, study sessions, or deep friendships. And even if it doesn’t lead to anything, at least you were confident enough to try. To put yourself out there. And that’s a small step in the right direction.

- Joining a club
It might seem daunting to join a club – you don’t know where to start, you don’t know anyone, or you worry it’ll be overwhelming. However, these actions are what build campus culture and your own university experience. Being part of a club helps create spaces for shared passions and strong student communities. It gives you something to be part of – something fun, fulfilling, and consistent. Whether it’s weekly meetings, planning events, or just laughing over snacks, it becomes something to look forward to.

- Asking for help (and realizing you’re not alone)
Emailing a professor, visiting the resource centres, or deciding to start a new club or course union—these can feel like little things. But they can lead to breakthroughs in your academic and emotional well-being!

- Participating in SUO elections
It’s easy to dismiss voting or feel intimidated by running, but these small actions create a real impact. Voting empowers student voices. Running builds leadership, confidence, and connection. Either way, you’re contributing to something bigger—and that matters.

University can feel overwhelming. It’s easy to believe that only the big achievements matter. But here’s what no one tells you: it’s the small decisions that shape the best parts of your journey.
Each time you say yes to something new, whether it’s a conversation, a vote, an event, or a seat beside someone, you’re creating a ripple. And often, it’s the quietest ripples that change everything.
So take the seat. Say hi. Show up. Wander into the event. Your future self might just thank you.
